Der Bote et Der Wanderer : deux titres emblématiques de périodiques et d’almanachs

Abstract

Among the increasing popularity of periodicals and almanacs in German-speaking countries since the end of the 18th century, two titles make use of emblematic figures in order to spread the German Enlightenment ideas through the news : Der Bote (“The Messenger”) and, from 1800 onwards, Der Wanderer (“The Wanderer”, occasionally Der Wandersmann). Even though their origins differ, both types of walking information-bearers are actually closely related. The realistic depiction, on the front page, of a figure familiar to readers, which in fact serves as a disguise for the editor, is subtly interwoven with rebellious messages delivered in various forms. They embody the rise of a liberal, innovative journalism, while revealing a mutation in the understanding of History.
