Abstract

A train generates waves in the ground when it runs at high speeds. Because the waves have very small amplitude, it is difficult to study them by direct observation in the field. A suitable way to approach the research problem is to use numerical models. By this approach, the author simulated train-induced waves from which the following vibration characteristics are investigated: surface wave propagation; angle between wavefronts and the train direction; ground displacement pattern along the train; effect of train speed on ground vibrations.
