Abstract

The World Health Organisation recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of an infant’s life. Low breastfeeding initiation and duration rates remain of concern internationally including Ireland. One strategy to address these rates is to involve women and their families in designing healthcare services that are more responsive to their needs. Research approaches which emphasise consumer participation are therefore needed. We discuss combining two participatory approaches; World Cafés and Experience-Based-Co-Design. These approaches facilitate consumer and healthcare provider participation in designing and researching healthcare services. We conclude that World Cafés are useful when combined with ExperienceBased-Co-Design to identify the important issues for women, families and healthcare providers to design responsive services to support women to breastfeed.
