Abstract
The interest in 3D map visualizations is increasing, the need for spatial 3D analyzes, 3D city models, detailed 3D buildings for indoor positioning or 3D map models for the integration in Virtual/Augmented Reality (VR/AR) environments is increasing, too. A 3D basemap is the basis for different 3D map applications and can be used for overlays, analyzes or for realistic mapping of the entire environment. However, many of the available basemaps are currently available in 2D only. In this article, we present strategies for converting the freely available basemap.at from 2D to 3D. Therefore, the technical implementation and some design decisions for the digital terrain model (DTM), point data, line data and polygon data are described in more detail. As the result, we present two first prototypical implementations of basemap.at-3D – one in a simplified/schematic version and one in a more realistic version of a 3D basemap.
