Abstract

In the controversial discussion about the reduction of emissions, there is often a lack of verifiable effects of climate protection measures, as in the case of the speed limit of 130 km/h on motorways. In order to make the counter-argument of longer travel times, which is often mentioned here, measurable, a GPS-based app is developed with dataRide. The implemented algorithm evaluates the driven speed profile and calculates for all sections of the journey, which are driven at higher speed, an additional time share, which would be necessary to cover the same distance at a speed of 130 km/h. The position data is filtered for a high quality of the calculations. The filters applied are intended to exclude inferior quality positions from processing. The evaluation of first test drives showed that a time saving is possible, whereby the subjective perception usually estimates a noticeably higher time gain compared to the objective measurement. On longer motorway sections, which take place outside rush hours, a noticeable time saving can be achieved by high speeds. For the majority of daily trips (e. g. commuters) this effect is limited to a few minutes or even seconds. The App aims at determining the personal time savings in relation to the individual driving behaviour of individual road users and does not provide any generally valid statements. By making the actual time saved visible, the supposed restriction of a speed limit is made conscious.
