Abstract

Work on the development of high performance reciprocating seals capable of operating over a temperature range of −50 to +200°C is described. The seals are either metal or reinforced ptfe, and various material combinations have been tried in order to reduce seal friction and wear. More fundamental studies on seal behaviour, including measurement of film thickness and pressure generation under metal seals, and theoritical work on the analysis of stresses in seals by finite element methods, are discussed.
