Abstract

SUMMARY The pharyngobranchial organ in Mugilidae, a special pharyngeal structure assuming particular importance in this family for filtration of food, has been studied. The examination was conducted at a macroscopic, histological and ultrastructural levels, with observations at the scanning and transmission electron microscopes. The pharyngobranchial organ consists of a denticular antero-lateral filtering portion and a gustative postero-medial one. The entire organ is supported by a complex skeletal system moved by an intrinsic muscle system. The filtering and gustatory functions are closely integrated in this organ so as to justify the particular alimentary habits of Mugilidae.
