Abstract

The concept of the ‘failure surface’ which describes failure of lubricated concentrated contacts in terms of critical interrelated load-velocity-temperature data is given. A corresponding new failure formula is proposed. Comparing several experimental failure data the failure formula and the failure-surface concept are applied for determining or characterizing the limits of thin film lubrication.
