Abstract

The brain is a complex and fascinating organ that plays a crucial role in shaping individuality. Despite years of research, both the physical brain and the metaphysical mind remain mysterious, especially to the uninitiated lay public. This has been exacerbated by “neuro-hype,” wherein unrealistic expectations and misunderstandings about the potential of advancements in neurotechnologies abound due to the “seductive allure of neuroscience.” Regardless, there have been real and rapid advancements in neurotechnologies, and Professor Nita Farahany’s new book, “The Battle for Your Brain,” aims to address numerous issues relating to these emerging technologies. While seemingly fanciful in their abilities to read and extrapolate meaning from the brainwaves representing our thoughts, these technologies are not hype and demand the attention of regulators and policymakers.
