Abstract

Background: The gall bladder is one of the most commonly receivedspecimens for histopathological examination and presents with a wide varietyof lesions ranging from inflammation to malignancy. The present study aims todetermine the histopathological spectrum of gallbladder lesions incholecystectomy specimens.Materials and Methods: The present study included 320 gallbladder specimensobtained from cholecystectomy procedures conducted at tertiary teachinghospital in Jammu. Cholecystectomy specimens received in the laboratory werefixed in 10% formalin and submitted to detailed gross examination.Haematoxylin and eosin was used to stain gallbladder sections from fundus, body and neck. Results: The present study included 320 cholecystectomyspecimens comprising predominantly of females (85%) with M:F ratio of 1:5.7.Maximum number of patients were between 31 and 40 years (31.9%). Out of320 cases, the maximum number of cases were of chronic calculouscholecystitis (271 cases, 84.7%) followed by chronic cholecystitis withcholesterolosis (14 cases, 4.4%). There were 9 cases of chronic acalculouscholecystitis. Other non-neoplastic lesions received were acute cholecystitis (4cases -1.3%), chronic cholecystitis with metaplasia (3 cases – 0.9%),xanthogranulomatous cholecystitis (12 cases – 3.8%), eosinophilic andfollicular cholecystitis (2 cases each – 0.6%) and adenocarcinoma gallbladder (2 cases - 0.6%).Conclusion: The histopathological spectrum of gallbladder disease aftercholecystectomy is quite varied ranging from inflammation to malignancy. Therefore, histopathological examination of gall bladder specimens is veryimportant for diagnosis and better management of patient. Keywords: Cholecystectomy, cholecystitis, gallbladder, histopathology
