Abstract

I n 1897, the American sociologist W. E. B. Du Bois was asked to design an exhibit on “African-American progress” for the 1900 Exposition Universelle, which was to be held in Paris (Battle-Baptiste & Rusert, 2018). Du Bois collected 500 photographs that attempted to show a varied and nuanced view of contemporary life in the United States for Black Americans.
