Abstract

The modern city can be smart, connected, democratic, touristic... But it can also be hot and polluted. Urban Heat Islands (UHI) and poor air quality are two phenomena that threaten city dwellers around the world, with major consequences on health, economic activity and the environment. This paper aims to investigate both the intensity and the relationship between UHI and air quality in the city of Casablanca. More specifically, we analyze air temperature, Total Column Ozone and PM10 concentration in three different locations in the city between 2015 and 2018. While the correlation of these factors does not prove any causal relationship, it does suggest that they may share common causes.
