Ozone has seen wide use because it is a powerful oxidizing agent that has a rapid reaction rate and few harmful reaction products. This paper reviews the application of ozone within aquaria and in aquaculture systems that use single-pass or recirculated water. The issues and mechanisms required to use ozone are reviewed, with particular emphasis on the processes of ozone gas generation and gas-to-liquid absorption, the contact time for reaction, and the removal of residual ozone.
