Critical Curating as Decolonial Practice: Protests and Pedagogy: Representations, Memories and Meanings—Anatomy of an Exhibition

Abstract

ABSTRACT:This article offers an analysis of Protests and Pedagogy: Representation Meanings and Memories an exhibition commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of the Sir George Williams Affair. The article revisits the curating process through critical, decolonial and resistive approaches and allows a rare glimpse into the archival records related to the 1969 event, Canada's most notorious student uprisings, when students took over the seventh-floor faculty lounge and ninth-floor computer centre to protest anti-Black racism in the classroom at Sir George Williams University.By revisiting these events fifty years later, the exhibition asked, What do these archival materials say to us today? The exhibition challenged existing cliched accounts of the affair through deliberate practices of subversion. In exchange, it highlighted lesser-known narratives, through images, sounds, newspaper accounts, official documents and oral testimonies that offer alternative curating methodologies that brings the archives to life.RÉSUMÉ:Cet article propose une lecture de Protests and Pedagogy: Representations, Meanings and Memories, une exposition commémorant le 50e anniversaire des émeutes raciales à l'Université Sir George Williams. L'article examine le processus organisationnel de l'exposition à partir d'une approche critique, décolonialiste et « résistive », et permet pour une rare fois de jeter un coup d'œil sur les archives des évènements de 1969, qui constituent le soulèvement étudiant le plus célèbre au Canada : l'occupation par les étudiant·e·s du salon des professeur·e·s, au 7e étage, et du centre d'informatique, au 9e, pour dénoncer le racisme contre les Noir·e·s qui avait cours dans les locaux de l'Université Sir George Williams.En revenant sur ces évènements cinquante ans plus tard, les commissaires posent la question suivante : « Que nous disent, aujourd'hui, ces documents d'archives ? » Par des méthodes délibérément subversives, l'exposition conteste les comptes rendus truffés de clichés sur cette affaire. En retour, elle met en lumière des récits moins connus, grâce à des images, des sons, des comptes rendus de journaux, des documents officiels et des témoignages oraux – moyens alternatifs d'organiser une exposition qui donnent vie aux archives.
