Exploring the intellectual structures of information systems development: A short critique

Abstract

This paper provides a brief critique of the article by Hirschheim, Klein and Lyytinen, concerned with the intellectual structures of the field of information systems development. Their paper is seen to have merit in proposing a way of classifying existing work and of proposing future research directions. However, this critique analyses some problems associated with their use of the key concepts of rationality, power, technology, language and organization. The analysis is used to develop some brief implications for future research and practice with respect to information systems development.
