Statistical Analysis of Deaths and Damages Caused by Lightning Strikes in Greece

Abstract

This paper provides processed data on the deaths and injuries of people and animals that occurred in Greece from 2010 to 2019 due to lightning strikes. In addition, material damage and fires caused by lightning have been recorded in facilities and buildings as well as means of transport during the same period and have been compared to the former decade. Records of deaths and injuries have been processed by year and region in an effort to correlate the number of casualties with the regions they took place. Afterwards, the relative lightning death indicator Dr is calculated for different provinces of Greece to express the relative number of lightning deaths taking into account population, area and lightning activity Ng. The correlation of data analysis with Dr helps to draw useful conclusions about the effectiveness of existing anti-lightning protection measures, the need to take additives in some areas as well as to raise awareness of the risks the population is exposed.
