Abstract
This article reveals how, in recent years, countries within the same region have reconfigured their higher education systems to incorporate technological training at the university level, as an alternative to the traditional public university model. We analyze the historical evolution of this transformation, including the new institutional expressions and their regional and differentiated character throughout Latin America. We also identify the causes fueling the process of institutional differentiation and the “universitization” of technological training. The emerging model seeks to articulate professional technological university systems into economic systems with increasingly differentiated subsystems. Finally, we conduct a comparative analysis of the process across Latin American, which reveals diverse national expressions of the ways in which countries are slowly reshaping their university systems and departing from the traditional professional model.
