Received: April 30, 2021 Revised: May 26, 2023 Accepted: July 09, 2023 Published: June 30, 2023 ABSTRACT This study aims to describe the socio-cultural life of the Chinese in Sidoarjo during Dutch colonialism. The main focus highlighted was the colonial government's policy towards Chinese descent in Sidoarjo. As well as how the Chinese descent adapts to the culture of the surrounding community, thus changing the social status of the Chinese. This study uses a historical method. This study combines literature reviews from libraries, e-journals, and field research by seeking oral sources. Oral sources are needed to strengthen or complement written sources. The results of the study explained that the policies issued by the colonial government had influenced the socio-cultural life of Chinese descent. In addition, the Western-style education received by the younger generation of Chinese has raised their status among the people. By mastering the Dutch language and dressing in a Western-style, the younger generation of Chinese is in the middle class.
