Neurotization of the biceps muscle by end-to-side neurorraphy between ulnar and musculocutaneous nerves

Abstract

Three patients with avulsed C5, C6, and C7 roots and two patients with avulsed C5 and C6 roots after trauma of the brachial plexus, were treated by neurotization of the biceps using nerve fibers derived from the ulnar nerve and obtained by end-to-side neurorraphy between the ulnar and musculocutaneous nerves. The age of patients ranged from 19 to 45. The interval between the accident and surgery was 2 to 13 months. Return of biceps contraction was observed 4 to 6 months after surgery. Four patients recovered grade 4 elbow flexion. One 45-year-old patient did not obtain any biceps contraction after 9 months.

Trois patients présentant une avulsion des racines C5, C6 et C7, et deux patients une avulsion C5 et C6 du plexus brachial, ont été traités par suture termino-latérale du nerf musculo-cutané sur le nerf ulnaire avivé. Les patients, âgés de 19 à 45 ans, ont été opérés 2 à 13 mois après leur accident. Le muscle biceps a présenté ses premières contractions 4 à 6 mois après l'intervention. Quatre patients ont récupéré une flexion contre résistance. Chez un patient, âgé de 45 ans, la chirurgie n'a donné aucun résultat, avec un recul de 9 mois.

Tres pacientes quienes presentan una avulsión de las raíces C5, C6, y C7, y dos pacientes con una avulsión C5 y C6 del plexo braquial, fueron tratados mediante una sutura termino lateral del nervio musculocutáneo sobre el nervio ulnar. Los pacientes, con edades de 19 a 45 años, fueron operados de 2 a 13 meses después del accidente. El músculo bíceps presentó sus primeras contracciones de 4 a 6 meses después de la intervención. Cuatro pacientes recuperaron la flexión contra resistencia. En un paciente, de 45 años, la cirugía no dio ningún resultado a nueve meses de la intervención
