This kind of machine allows either volume- or pressure-based controlled ventilation. The interdependence between both important physiological variables, respiration volume and lung pressure, is highlighted and the requirements for the control system are discussed in this paper. Based on a mathematical model for the respiration device and the characteristics of the patient lung, a feedback control concept for both respiration modes is developed and is presented.
