Firstly, the insulation coordination characteristics, methods and principles suitable for UPFC are proposed. Then the layout scheme of 500kV UPFC arresters is designed. Thirdly, to verify the insulation coordination design, the lightning overvoltage model and internal overvoltage model of UPFC are established. The transient overvoltage and lightning overvoltage is calculated, which proves the proposed insulation design.
