Konversi Seng Dari Limbah Baterai Zn-C Menjadi Senyawa Seng Sulfat
Zinc carbon battery consists of zinc (Zn) in which carbon (C) is covered with manganese dioxide (MnO 2 ) and ammonium chloride (NH 4 Cl) in the form of a paste. The Zn-C battery is a primary battery which will eventuallu be disposed as a waste. Waste Zn-C batteries contain ahazardous waste which is harmful to the environment. To reduce hazardous substance, a conversion of the zinc plate was carried out into a useful zinc sulfate compound. The aim of this study was to determine the amount of sulfuric acid required to convert zinc plates to zinc sulfate and the percent efficiency of yield. The conversion process included pre-treatment, dissolving zinc in various concentration of sulfuric acid (5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, 25%, and 30%) in a volume of 80 mL,stirring at 450 rpm, and heating, filtration, and crystallization. Zinc sulfate heptahydrate crystals were formed at room temperature. Maximum yields were archieved at a 30% sulfuric acid concentration with a 1:1 ratio of zinc to sulfuric acid with a small excess of sulfuric acid. Under these conditions, ZnSO 4 .7H 2 O crystals produced was 18.39 grams with an efficiency of 83.71%.
