Treatment of Sexual Dysfunction in Male Alcoholics:: An Experimental Study

The first 1,000 admissions to a "low medical" social setting detoxification center were screened to identify (self report) those patients who had experienced two or more experiences of sexual dysfunction within the preceding twelve months. Following detoxification, all subjects were exposed to two one-hour orientation sessions (to alcohol as a drug and alcoholism as a disease process). The experimental group received twelve individual sessions (1% hours weekly) specifically focused on their particular sexual dysfunction. The control group received twelve individual sessions (1 % hours weekly) with primary emphasis on their alcohol problems. No specific focus was given to their sexual dysfunction. Obtained differences between groups demonstrated a clear superiority in sexual functioning for the experimental group.
