The results of experimental examinations of optical fiber characteristics which were exposed to external influences are shown. The program for automatic determination of fiber type by re-flectogram is presented. The database of profiles of the Mandelstam — Brillouin backscatter spectrums for fibers of different kinds and manufacturers allow to classify the optical fibers in the optical cables and detect damaged sections of fiber optical communication line.
