Digital Image Processing-based Methodology for a Pupillometer
The world is full of geometric figures, how to measure them can change the understanding of every element and phenomenon, including the eyes. Ophthalmology, like many branches of medicine, face various problems focused on research that goes beyond the understanding of diseases of the eye. The pupil can reflect various defects and abnormalities related to the nervous system, so make a correct study of it can be the difference between surgery or a treatment, however, its study is known to be carried out using different tools and under different conditions that can lead to discrepancies between the measures that are considered normal or not. These situations are given for involving the perception and judgment of specialists in their analysis or the refusal of them to use pupilometers (possibly due to the methods of some of these devices to determine the measurements). This paper analyzes the use of morphological operators, especially the ultimate opening, as well as the concept of Feret diameter in the proposal of the design of a pupillometer based on digital processing images to detect and analyze related conditions detectable through malformations in the pupils, such as anisocoria, astigmatism, among others.
