First, the average stress-average strain relationship of the plate elements subjected to combined thrust and lateral pressure is formulated in an analytical manner. Then, based on the equilibrium conditions of forces and bending moments considering the influence of lateral pressure, the average stress-average strain relationship of stiffener elements with attached plating is derived. The proposed analytical procedure is then verified through the comparison of the calculated results with those by the FEM analysis for both plate and stiffener elements.
