The aim of this study is to consider the issues of monitoring social and economic development of the Russian Federation in reference to industry sector characteristics. Methodology. The study presents the system and content of monitoring, its priority areas, and proposes the structure of industry monitoring. The authors employed observation, generalization, interpretation of results and discursive analysis methods. Results. The study revealed the role of industries in the process of transition to sustainable development and maintenance of sustainability in the future; presented the essential characteristics of the proposed set of monitoring mechanism indicators based on official, reliable, regular and up-to-date indicators provided by the FSGS, as well as the criteria for sustainable development; set the points and periods of observation, interpretation of data, subsequent analysis of production processes, preparation of forecasts and recommendations for federal and regional public administration bodies; focused the expected results of the monitoring. Theoretical and Practical Implications.
