Bilateral, subtotal strumectomies were carried out, leaving a remnant of 2-3 g of thyroid tissue in place. There were no immediate postoperative complications. Hyperthyroidism recurred in two instances. During the same time, 26 children and adolescents up to 18 years of age underwent surgery for autonomous adenoma.
