The Four Crucial Cs: A Solid Foundation for Building a Family Education Center

Abstract:Family Leadership Center of Yarmouth, Maine, has incorporated the 4Cs––connect, capable, count, courage––into every aspect of the organization. Using the 4Cs has enabled the nonprofit's board to create a horizontal instead of vertical structure. The Cs have also been utilized to build a leadership team that can work together to meet the needs of the organization and face challenges. Through classes and workshops given to teachers, parents, grandparents, and caregivers, participants have learned that discouragement is a basis for misbehavior and that an understanding of the 4Cs builds an encouraging family dynamic. Participants also recognize that the Cs have a useful application outside the home. The Cs are an essential element of family meetings, and parents in the programs have shared the transformations that have occurred in their families. Finally, the 4Cs are central to furthering social interest.
