How the Design of Generator Sets for Distributed Generation Affects the Design of Emergency Controls
Distributed generation (DG) produces cheaper energy at the site of consumption while providing more reliable electricity delivery to critical users. Every year, Russia’s industrial enterprises produce ever more electricity and heat at their own DG facilities. Advanced low- and medium-capacity gas-turbine and gas-piston generator sets (GS) are widely used at DG facilities. The GS have a number of design parameters that significantly affect the rate and parameters of transients in case of external disturbances. These factors should be borne in mind when calculating the electrical parameters if appropriate decisions are to be made on which emergency controls would be best for the GS and the adjacent grid. This paper analyzes the cons of gas-turbine and gas-piston GS to provide guidelines on how to optimize the GS-to-distribution grid or GS-to-inhouse power grid connections in the light of such cons.
