A Study of the Visual Preferences in Superhero Character Design -Focusing on the American Film of Avengers-

세계적인 흥행 기록을 세운 10편의 영화 중 ‘어벤져스’가 있다. 이어서 다양한 파생상품까지도 관객의 호응을 얻었다. 이 현상은 슈퍼히어로 캐릭터에 대한 대중의 호감을 잘 보여준다. 그런데 관객이 영웅 캐릭터에게 갖는 호감에 관한 연구는 부족했다. 본 연구는 영화 "어벤져스"에서 출발해 진화미학의 연구를 통해, 슈퍼히어로의 시각 선호를 탐구하려 한다. 본 연구에서는 먼저 슈퍼히어로 영화 캐릭터의 기원, 현황과 몸매 특징을 정리하였다. 이를 바탕으로 실험을 통해 슈퍼히어로 캐릭터의 몸매 특징을 황금비율과 가까운 시각적 선호를 확인했다. 즉, 첫째, 슈퍼히어로 여성 캐릭터는 일반적으로 최고의 허리-엉덩이 비율(WHR)에 가깝다. 둘째, 슈퍼히어로 남성 캐릭터는 일반적으로 최고의 골격과 근육이 비율에 가깝고 발달하다. 또 여기에 진화미학 관점으로 설명한다. 이상의 캐릭터 시각 특성은 진화 과정에서 힘을 가진 지도자의 우월한 형질을 의미하며 관객의 호감을 불러일으킨다. 마지막으로 슈퍼히어로 캐릭터 디자인에 대한 응용 사고를 제안한다. 진화 미학의 관점초정상 자극 계념으로 보면 황금 비율과 가까운 슈퍼히어로 캐릭터는 일반 캐릭터보다 더 매력적이고, 시청자의 주의력을 끄는 것을 더욱 쉽다. 본 연구는 진화미학 관점으로 슈퍼히어로 캐릭터에 황금 비율로 호감의 원인을 분석하여, 영웅 캐릭터 디자인에 관한 과학적 참고 자료를 제공할 수 있기를 기대한다. Reviewing the top 10 box offices worldwide and in North America, the film "The Avengers" entered the list. The linked derivative industries have all received an overwhelming response. It visually illustrates the public"s favorable opinion of superheroes. However, an exploration of the reasons for their favorability is lacking. This study explores the structure of audiences" visual preferences for superhero characters from the film The Avengers, starting from evolutionary aesthetics. To this end, this study compiles and analyzes American superhero film characters" origin, current development, and stature characteristics. Secondly, researcher designed an experiment to verify the public"s golden ratio stature preference for superhero characters. The reasons for the selection are explained from the perspective of evolutionary aesthetics. That is to say, female characters have a near-optimal waist-to-hip ratio, and males have a near-optimal skeletal-muscular balance. It implies a superior trait of the leader in the evolutionary process, with a sense of power, which attracts the audience"s attention. Finally, the above analysis incorporates applied thinking about hero character design. Combined with the evolutionary aesthetics view of supernormal stimulus, superhero characters close to the golden ratio body shape are more attractive and likelier to attract the audience"s attention than the average characters. This study analyzes the reasons for a visual preference regarding the golden ratio in superhero characters" body features from the perspective of evolutionary aesthetics, hoping to provide scientific reference material for producing hero characters.
