While in Classical Biblical Hebrew (CBH) the preposition always means 'between' (with a single possible exception), from the time of the exile onwards it also takes on the meaning of 'among', probably under the influence of Aramaic and because of the disappearance of the composite preposition בְּקֶרֶב, which led to the reconfiguration of the use of prepositions such as בֵּין and בְּתוֹךְ.
