It focuses primarily on aikido tourism and provides insights into strategies and initiatives that can be implemented to leverage the region’s unique cultural and sport-related heritage for tourism purposes. Furthermore, it highlights the importance of authenticity in sport tourism experiences, emphasising Tanabe’s role as the birthplace of aikido’s founder and the involvement of the sensei (instructor), and its possession of a rich historical background and competent guides/translators. These aspects ensure authentic and meaningful encounters with tourists. Additionally, this case study emphasises the significance of industry-government-academia collaboration in enhancing sustainable tourism development.
