Adopting the linguistic imperialism of Phillipson and the identity negotiation theory of Stella Ting-Toomey, this ethnography study tries to uncover questions on challenges in intercultural communication caused by English imperialism: (1) How far is English as linguistic imperialism to their mutual intercultural communication? Moreover, (2) To what extent does linguistic imperialism influence intercultural communication competence? This study is a qualitative approach using autoethnography and interview techniques to obtain data of the self-experience of Indonesian Muslim female doctoral students in Australia. 摘要

本研究旨在调查六名印尼穆斯林女博士生在澳大利亚第一年的跨国生活中因英语帝国主义而产生的跨文化交际生活。英语作为全球联系中的第一语言等级,发挥着至关重要的作用。本民族志研究采用菲利普森(Phillipson)的语言帝国主义和斯特拉-丁-托米(Stella Ting-Toomey)的身份协商理论,试图揭示英语帝国主义在跨文化交际中带来的挑战:(1)英语作为语言帝国主义在多大程度上影响了她们之间的跨文化交际?此外,(2) 语言帝国主义在多大程度上影响了跨文化交际能力?本研究采用定性研究方法,使用自述和访谈技术,获取在澳大利亚的印尼穆斯林女博士生的自我体验数据。随后,这些女博士生通过自己的 "心智 "知识、动机和技能,获得在英语优势下支持其身份建构成功的适应性、有效性和适当的策略。
