Fostering sustainability and green innovation reporting in manufacturing firms: an investigation of barriers through ISM-MICMAC approach

Sustainability and green innovation reporting (SGIR) are proactive approaches for disclosing necessary information to stakeholders. Despite valuable insights, reporting standards have not been embraced in developing economies compared to developed economies. SGIR has confronted challenges that have not been well-explored in the literature. Therefore, this study analyzes barriers to SGIR through ISM-MICMAC methodology. Initially, barriers were collected from the literature and filtered with the Delphi method’s help. After collecting data from related experts, it was identified that high initiation costs, lack of customer demand, and lack of commitment and support are the main barriers to SGIR. Lack of standardized guidelines, time constraints, and lack of staff and human resources are the least essential obstacles. Relevant authorities should pay attention to developing standardized policies and mechanisms for effectively adopting sustainability and green innovation reporting practices. This study contributes to the SGIR body of knowledge by bridging a gap between academic research and practical implications regarding SGIR barriers. It provides actionable insights for shaping a sustainable and environmentally conscious future.
