Fifty adult patients scheduled to undergo elective neurosurgery for intracranial tumor resection were randomized to receive either NS or BC as intraoperative or maintenance fluid. Metabolic and renal parameters were estimated prior to induction (baseline), at 1 h and 2 h after induction, at the end of surgery and 4 h after extubation. Serum neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) was measured postoperatively. Brain relaxation score was assessed by the operating surgeon. Baseline values of variables were similar between the groups. At rest of the observed time-points, pH was significantly lower, while blood urea, serum creatinine, sodium, chloride, NGAL and plasma osmolality were significantly higher in the NS group as compared to the BC group. Brain relaxation score, serum bicarbonate and base excess were comparable between the two groups.
