Over six months, 755 participants completed two waves of self-reported questionnaires. Results revealed four distinct latent profiles: <em>Low Emotional Eaters</em> (11.5–15.8%), <em>Emotional Eating-Undereaters</em> (31.1–40.5%), <em>Emotional Eating-Overeaters</em> (15.9–18.3%), and <em>Combined-Emotional Eaters</em> (29.7–37.2%). Approximately 50% of participants in each profile maintained their behavioral patterns over time, with transitions often shifting towards <em>Combined-Emotional Eaters</em>. Individuals in the profile of <em>Emotional Eating-Overeaters</em> exhibited the highest level of anxiety, depression, stress, and disordered eating. Gender, self-esteem level, and self-esteem instability were associated with profile membership and transition probabilities. These findings highlight the presence of distinct and relatively unstable patterns of negative emotional eating, indicating the potential distinction between trait and state emotional eating.
