Celery is an allergen not to be overlooked, as it is used in the food industry as well as in cosmetics. The prevalence of celery allergy remains low in the pediatric population, but is higher in adults, with a high risk of anaphylaxis. Celery allergens differ from one another in their characteristics: content within the different types of celery, sensitivity to heat, link with certain phenotypes (pollen-food syndrome). For diagnosis, native prick-tests are more sensitive than commercial extracts. Source-specific IgE may fail in a third of cases, and recombinant allergens are sometimes useful. Oral provocation testing is essential in cases of diagnostic doubt. The natural history of this allergy is not well described, and the cure rate is difficult to estimate. Avoidance of celery is the mainstay of treatment.
