Docosahexaenoic acid and eicosapentaenoic acid are 2 potentially beneficial n-3 PUFAs primarily acquired through dietary intake. Here we review current literature examining the role of n-3 PUFAs and the biological mechanisms by which these fatty acids alter the incidence and pathologies of chronic lung diseases including asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and interstitial lung disease. We also highlight the role of n-3 PUFAs in vulnerable populations such as pre/postnatal children, those with obesity, and the elderly.
