Chronic infection can result in cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma.</p><p><strong>Explanation: </strong>Epidemiological studies have indicated that persistent infection with hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a major risk for the development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), mainly through chronic inflammation, cell deaths, and proliferation.
