Detailed mechanism studies indicate that hypervalent iodine(<span>iii</span>) plays dual roles as an efficient mediator and an oxidant, and the continuously generated α-acetoxylated ketones and α-SCD<sub>3</sub> ketones are the key intermediates in the current three-component reactions.
