Klopstock was a family friend and later a mentor to the young count, and Stolberg was also well acquainted with other members of the Copenhagen Circle. He wrote his first poems as a teenager, in 1772 he became a member in the Göttinger Hainbund, and he also had close contact with representatives of the Sturm und Drang. The essay asks about the connection between the Copenhagen Circle and Stolberg’s early work (until about 1780). It focuses on the themes of freedom, fatherland and nature.
