Philoctetes, pain, and physicians: Using Greek tragedy in medicine
Background
Learning about the human condition through Greek tragedies offers a dynamic way for medical students and professionals to reflect on their own experiences.
Methodology
In this article, we discuss Philoctetes by Sophocles, which depicts an example of human vulnerability and offers powerful lessons on the nature and taxonomy of pain.
Results/Discussion
We describe how we used the lessons learned from Philoctetes to empathize with the different types of pain experienced by a patient with heart failure at a student-run clinic.
Conclusion/Perspectives
We hope that our experience using Greek tragedy to foster stronger patient-provider relationships and improve treatment outcomes encourages other medical students and healthcare professionals to use the humanities to inform our role as healers.
期刊介绍:
This review aims to compare approaches to medical ethics and bioethics in two forms, Anglo-Saxon (Ethics, Medicine and Public Health) and French (Ethique, Médecine et Politiques Publiques). Thus, in their native languages, the authors will present research on the legitimacy of the practice and appreciation of the consequences of acts towards patients as compared to the limits acceptable by the community, as illustrated by the democratic debate.
