Destruction of the tooth's supportive tissue – which is called periodontolysis – results in the loss of the teeth. It has been well established that the periodontolysis aetiology is due to bacteria. By their organisation as a biofilm, bacteria are in ideal conditions to express their virulence factors. This organisation is based on the combination of different bacterial species, each of them having its own specificity and occuring at different moment of the pathology. Microbiological techniques allow us to identify the different bacterial serotypes, and also to characterize their virulence factors.
