Firstly, the preparation and properties of cellulose nanomaterials are briefly introduced. Then, the applications of cellulose nanomaterials in different petroleum exploitation processes, including drilling, cementing, and enhancing oil recovery are systematically discussed. Finally, the perspectives and challenges of cellulose nanomaterials for oil exploration applications are provided. It is expected that cellulose nanomaterials will be developed as promising oilfield chemicals for large scale application.
