Provincializing Roman Dacia: The Canadian–Romanian Apulum Roman Villa Project, 2018–2019

Abstract:The Apulum Roman Villa Project (ARVP) examines the "provincialization" and "de-provincialization" of Roman Dacia through the archaeological micro-history of a villa site at Oarda-Bulza, just outside one of the provincial capitals at Apulum. As one of the first villas in Dacia to be excavated scientifically and from multidisciplinary perspectives, the site promises to shed new light on the interplays among forms of production, cultural consumption, community formation, and incorporation into a host of new imperial networks (economic, military, and social). Aerial, geophysical, and pedestrian surveys undertaken in 2018 allowed identification of four major buildings within an enclosure: an elite residential structure; a productive zone that also seems to have housed its own community; and two storage buildings. Additionally, traces of Early and Late Iron Age occupation have been identified on site. The surveys also point to the ongoing potential of the site for future excavations.Résumé:Le projet collaboratif « Apulum Roman Villa Project » (ARVP) examine le procès de devenir (et cesser d'être) une province de l'empire romain à travers l'archéologie d'une villa à Oarda-Bulza, juste au sud de la capitale provinciale (Apulum). Le site est une des premiers d'être fouiller scientifiquement et avec des approches pluridisciplinaires. Les questions de recherche se concentrent sur les interactions entre les formes de production, la consomption culturelle, la formation des communautés, et l'incorporation en nouveaux réseaux impériales (économique, militaire, sociale). Le projet a fait des prospections aériennes, géophysique, et pedestrian en 2018, qui ont permis l'identification de quatre bâtiments dans un enclos : un édifice domestique prestigieux ; une zone productive qui a abrité sa propre communauté ; et deux magasins. Il y a aussi des restes d'occupation de l'Age du fer. Les prospections indiquent aussi le potentiel pour des nouvelles fouilles pour éclairer l'histoire et les dynamiques économiques, sociales, et culturelles dans la province.
