To determine the temperature range at which this additive is operative temperature-yield profiles from tube pyrolyses have been obtained for both untreated and borate-treated tobacco. The profile for untreated tobacco indicates that there are two distinct modes of phenol formation. Addition of borate to the tobacco suppresses phenol formation at lower temperatures and greatly enhances its formation at higher temperatures.
