La deuda de un traductor: La poética de Aristóteles de Alonso Ordóñez (1624-1626)

In 1626 Alonso Ordonez published the first Spanish translation of Aristotle’s Poetics ever to appear in print. I argue that, rather than the Greek original, Ordonez took as the source of his work the sixteenth-century Latin and Italian translations by Alessandro Pazzi, Bernardo Segni, Lodovico Castelvetro and Alessandro Piccolomini. The analysis of Ordonez’s work, collated with a previous version preserved in the manuscript Matritensis 2624, makes it possible to outline the method and the principles that underpin a translation that, losing sight of the original, appears to us as a mosaic of previous works.
