***  Snobberyandthemechanicsofdesire in Death in Venice *** This article suggests that the snobbery is probably the main reason why the romance between Aschenbach and Tadzio, the characters of Thomas Mann’s Death in Venice, does not happen. The authors analyze the personality of Aschenbach with the help of the critic works of Charles Baudelaire, Albert Camus and Rene Girard on snobbery and dandyism. This paper then sustains that the snobbery that Aschenbach displays has to do with his attempt to create a work of art of his own persona taking into account the artistic and literary models that surround him. In so doing, Aschenbach goes against the romantic idea of a completely autonomous personality and desire. At last, the article points to the fact that the book embodies the mimetic mechanism and presents the paradox of dandyism and snobbery, which is to try to hold the romantic illusion of originality, being driven by the mimicry of the mediator at the same time. Keywords :Snobbery; Dandyism; MimeticDesire; Thomas Mann; Rene Girard.
