“One is not in control in dreams”: Reading Dionne Brand’s Notes to Belonging

ABSTRACT:Drawing attention to the subtitle of Dionne Brand’s 2001 nonfiction book A Map to the Door of No Return: Notes to Belonging, this article traces the author’s comparison between diaspora and “bad dreams,” as arranged in fragments and shaped by transhistorical logics of captivity. I stage a collision between notes and dreams, two of A Map to the Door of No Return’s many literary contours, in order to accentuate the author’s powerful critique of the romantic and violent assumptions of belonging. Brand’s deposition, where dreams constitute evidence, is not so much an undoing of historical violence—an impossibility—as it is a psychic undoing, hesitantly redirected back to the text’s unstable “I.” Approaching the enforced collectivity of Canadian nationalism, I close by locating A Map to the Door of No Return in a local context.RÉSUMÉ:Attirant l’attention sur le sous-titre de l’œuvre non romanesque de Dionne Brand parue en 2001, A Map to the Door of No Return: Notes to Belonging, cet article suit le fil de la comparaison que dresse l’auteure entre diaspora et « mauvais rêves », comparaison arrangée en fragments et façonnée par des logiques transhistoriques de captivité. Je mets en scène une collision entre les notes et les rêves, deux des nombreux contours littéraires de l’œuvre, afin de faire ressortir la critique puissamment formulée par l’auteure des présupposés romantiques et violents de l’appartenance. La déposition de Brand, où les rêves constituent une preuve, n’évoque pas tant une (impossible) défaite de la violence historique qu’une perte psychique, annulation freudienne redirigée avec hésitation vers le « je » instable du texte. Je conclus en situant A Map to the Door of No Return dans le contexte local, dans la perspective de la collectivité imposée typique du nationalisme canadien.
